Abstract
<PICT:0641945/III/1> Feed gases for the synthesis of hydrocarbons consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide are obtained by oxidizing a hydrocarbon gas such as methane in the presence of a fluidized solid catalyst of finely-divided iron, cobalt, nickel, or combinations of these with or without zinc, under 200-300 p.s.i. pressure and between 1200-2200 DEG F., by means of a reducible metal oxide, preferably iron, present in such amount as to furnish one atom of oxygen combined as reducible oxide per atom of carbon. The iron oxide is formed and maintained by circulating a small percentage of the iron through an oxidation zone, while maintaining the greater part, at least 70 per cent and preferably 90-95 per cent of the catalyst in the form of a metal. The hydrocarbon gases enter reaction zone 1 via pipes 2 and 9, the product being withdrawn at 3. The iron catalyst is circulated through pipe 4 to the oxidation zone 5 and back via pipe 8 and 10. A heat transfer system containing fused salt is defined by the closed circuit 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. Preferred catalysts are iron-nickel or iron-zinc combinations wherein 90-95 per cent is nickel or zinc and the remainder iron. Preferred operating conditions are under 100 p.s.i. pressure and at a temperature between 1700 DEG and 1900 DEG F.
