Abstract
Apparatus for the production of oxygenated organic compounds by the catalytic interaction of carbon oxides and hydrogen is made of metals such as copper, silver, or aluminium, or alloys thereof such as copper-manganese alloy, or special steels containing a substantial percentage of chromium, tungsten, vanadium, or molybdenum. Alternatively, iron or steel apparatus may be lined with such metals in sheet form or by electroplating, &c. Catalytic agents, preparation of.-According to the examples, catalytic materials for use in the reaction mentioned above are prepared by (1) introducing zinc oxide into fused potassium bichromate and reducing the product with hydrogen; (2) mixing chromium trioxide with zinc oxide and baryta, (3) adding tungstic acid to copper oxide and lead oxide, (4) heating a mixture of ammonium bichromate, zinc oxide, and potassium carbonate, (5) introducing zinc oxide into molten sodium bichromate and reducing with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and (6) mixing zinc oxide and chromium trioxide with monganeous carbonate. Specifications 227,147, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 229,714 and 229,715 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 20488/13.ALSO:Oxygenated organic compounds of a higher order than methanol are obtained by passing a mixture of carbon monoxide or dioxide with hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure over a methanol-forming catalyst but at a diminished speed compared with that required for the formation of methanol under otherwise similar conditions. Iron, nickel and cobalt must be excluded from the contact material, apparatus and reaction gases. In the case of the apparatus, this should either consist of metals such as copper, silver, aluminium, or alloys thereof such as copper-manganese alloy, or special steels containing a substantial percentage of chromium, tungsten, vanadium or molybdenum, or alternatively, iron or steel apparatus may be lined with such metals in the sheet form or by electroplating &c. Catalysts suitable for the reaction comprise metallic oxides which are non-reducible under the conditions of working and preferably p contain an alkali metal compound. The constituent gases may be employed in any proportions and nitrogen or gaseous hydrocarbons may also be present. Examples are given of the production of oily bodies consisting mainly of higher alcohols with some aldehydes and methanol by passing mixtures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at stated gas velocities, temperatures and pressures over catalytic materials prepared by (1) introducing zinc oxide into fused potassium bichromate and reducing the product with hydrogen, (2) mixing chromium trioxide with zinc oxide and baryta, (3) adding tungstic acid to copper oxide and lead oxide, (4) heating a mixture of ammonium bichromate, zinc oxide and potassium carbonate, (5) introducing zinc oxide into molten sodium bichromate and reducing with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and (6) mixing zinc oxide and chromic trioxide with manganous carbonate. In some instances, the gas velocity for the formation of substantially pure methanol is given for purposes of comparison. Specifications 227,147, 229,714, and 229,715, are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 20488/13.
