Catalytic materials.-A nickel catalyst, for producing hydrogen from hydrocarbons and steam, is carried on a fireproof carrier; for example, magnesia, which is suitably shaped, burnt at a high temperature, soaked with nickel nitrate, heated to decompose the nitrate, and placed in the contact furnace. Other suitable nickel compounds may be used, provided that they become converted into metallic nickel, or nickel oxide, or both, during the reaction, for example, the carbonate or hydroxide. Alternatively nickel is precipitated upon the carrier by the decomposition of nickel carbonyl. The nickel may be used mixed with other metals or metallic oxides.
