Abstract
In the reaction between ferrous sulphate and ammonia, producing ammonium sulphate and iron oxide or hydroxide, the latter is deposited by means of an oxidation process, oxygen or oxygen-containing gases being specified for this purpose, in a stage higher than the divalent stage of oxidation. In examples, a solution of ferrous sulphate and ammonia is treated in an autoclave at 200 DEG C. with air at a pressure of 8 and 13 atmospheres respectively. The process may be effected without pressure, but an elevated temperature is desirable. In another modification, the admission of ammonia and the oxidation proceed simultaneously. The filtered solution is concentrated. The ferrous sulphate may be oxidized in the solid state, for example, by air at elevated temperatures (whereby basic ferric sulphate is produced); the product is reacted with aqueous ammonia and the ferric hydroxide filtered, or in a modification gaseous ammonia may be passed over the heated salt together with or subsequent to the oxidizing gases. Above 400 DEG C., ammonium sulphate is volatilized. Reference is made to the use of directly-heated rotary furnaces. Ferric oxide produced may be used as a polishing agent or pigment, or for the production of metallic iron.
