Abstract
Alkali dichromates are obtained by treating alkali chromates in the aqueous phase and in the presence of the requisite quantity of chromium oxide or hydroxide or of metallic chromium or its alloys with oxygen or gases containing it under pressure at temperatures above 100 DEG C., say at 250-300 DEG C. In one example a chromium ore is treated with fused caustic soda in the presence of iron oxide or roost residue at 450-500 DEG C. to obtain chromate. A part of the product is reduced by hydrogen under pressure in the presence of water at 300 DEG C. and the chromium hydroxide recovered mixed with further chromate and treated in the presence of water at 280-300 DEG C. with air or oxygen under pressure to obtain a solution of sodium dichromate. In another example, crude chromate formed by oxidizing roasting at 900-950 DEG C. of a mixture of chromium ore, sodium carbonate, slaked lime, and iron oxide, is treated with oxygen under pressure at 280-300 DEG C. after addition of ferrochrome and water. Carbon dioxide obtained from the carbon in the ferrochrome is bound by the lime present; alternatively by using a current of air instead of oxygen the carbon dioxide may be removed in the issuing gases, but in such case the lime present is preferably converted to carbonate after the oxidation is complete in order to decompose any calcium chromate. In a third example crude chromate containing lime is reduced to chromite at 400-600 DEG C. by hydrogen with or without carbon dioxide. After leaching out alkali the residue is added to crude chromate lye and the mixture oxidized to dichromate as before described. Carbon dioxide is introduced before or after oxidation to convert lime present to carbonate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 364,361.
