Abstract

Alkali dichromates, for instance sodium dichromate, are obtained by oxidation by a dry process above 300 DEG C. and under pressure of a mixture of chromium oxide or substances containing it or of metallic chromium or its alloys with the requisite amount of the necessary base or mono-chromate. Oxygen or air is preferably used for the oxidation and the pressure is such that decomposition of dichromate is avoided. Excess of the chromium constituent may be used to prevent fusion, such excess being returned to the process. When monochromate is a constituent of the reaction mixture intimate admixture of the reactants may be effected by subjecting them to a preliminary reducing treatment, for instance with hydrogen at 400 DEG C. In examples temperatures of 300-500 DEG C. and pressures up to 5 kgs. are used.
