511,841. Aminonitriles. BERGWERKSVERBAND ZUR VERWERTUNG VON SCHUTZRECHTEN DER KOHLENTECHNIK GES.. Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1981. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Aminonitriles are prepared by mixing hydroxynitriles, having the hydroxyl and cyanogen groups linked to the same carbon atom, with an excess of liquefied ammonia or aqueous ammonia solution containing as much or more ammonia than a solution saturated under normal conditions, passing the mixture at raised temperature and increased pressure through a passage apparatus and finally allowing the mixture to expand. The components may be passed through a mixing vessel fitted with a stirrer before entering the passage apparatus. External heat may be applied to the passage apparatus, if necessary. The process applied to hydroxy-acetonitrile, and alpha-hydroxy-propionitrile is described. The parts of the apparatus exposed to the hydroxynitrile or reaction mixture are preferably made of or lined with aluminium. Specification 436,692 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use of diluted hydroxynitrile solution and aqueous ammonia of about 30 per cent. strength under higher pressures. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
