Abstract

Meta-aminophenol is prepared by the caustic fusion of metanilic acid in presence of added steam, preferably at 250-300 DEG C. In an example the reaction is performed with mixed caustic soda and potash, and the introduction of superheated steam. A table showing comparative yields when nitrogen, or steam, is added, and when no addition is made, to the reaction mixture, is given. Water may be added before heating, but requires additional heat.
