Abstract

A sodium carbonate having the composition Na2CO33NaHCO3 is prepared by heating a mixture of sodium bicarbonate such that the proportion of carbonic acid in the mixture is not less than the proportion in the desired compound. The temperature is preferably 95-100 DEG C. and the process may be effected in an externally heated rotary furnace. The reaction is effected in the presence of a small proportion of water, which may be that contained in crude sodium bicarbonate or the water of crystallization of sodium carbonate but no considerable quantity of mother liquor is produced.
