Abstract

A composition for staining wood, leather, &c. is prepared by heating leather waste with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric or nitric acid, and, when the mixture has become plastic, adding caustic alkali, which yields a gelatinous solution. Sulphate of iron may be added to the solution, or the wood &c. may be treated with sulphate of iron after treatment with the stain.
