Abstract
Crude glycyrrhizin as it is obtained from liquorice, is purified by treatment with an alcohol or mixture of alcohols of limited solubility in water, such as pine oil. The mixture stratifies, the upper layer being the solution of purified glycyrrhizin. The solution is treated with an adsorbent to further purify it, and may then be treated with a reducing bleaching-agent such as sodium hydrosulphite and washed with water. Dilute ammonia or alkali hydroxide is then added and the precipitated glycyrrhizin salt is separated and dried.ALSO:Crude glycyrrhizin as it is obtained from liquorice is purified by treatment with an alcohol or mixture of alcohols of limited solubility in water, such as pine oil.
