Abstract

3 - Chloro - 4 - hydroxycyclotetramethylene sulphone is prepared by treating 3 : 4-dehydrocyclotetramethylene sulphone with chlorine in the presence of water. Suitably, an aqueous solution or suspension of the starting material is treated with chlorine water or gaseous chlorine. An organic solvent, e.g. acetic acid or alcohol, and an acid-binding agent, e.g. calcium carbonate, may also be present. Examples are given. The starting material is obtainable from butadiene and sulphur dioxide, as described in German Specification 506,839.
