Abstract
542,633. Hydrocellulose. REEMTSMA, P. F., and WARTH, C.. (trading as CHEMISCHE FABRIK LOWENBERG WARTH &CO.). June 15, 1939, No. 17566. Convention date, June 20, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] Cellulosic material is treated at about 0‹ C. with super-concentrated hydrochloric acid of s.g. greater than 1.16 by suspending the material in an organic liquid, e.g. benzine, benzol, or carbon tetrachloride, passing in hydrochloric acid gas and cooling, as by carbon dioxide snow or dry ice, thus forming hydrocellulose. This may be hydrolysed to glucose by treatment, e.g. for 10 mins. at 70‹ C., with acid of s.g. less than 1.16, which may be obtained by driving off excess hydrochloric acid gas from the super-concentrated acid.
