Abstract
Dinitrodibenzanthrones are obtained by treating dibenzanthrone or its substitution products with aqueous nitric acid containing other water-soluble acids which are not attacked by nitric acid, the concentration of the nitric acid being from about 10 per cent to almost 75 per cent, while there must be 25 per cent of water in the solutions. Conditions of temperature and concentration within the said range are chosen to produce the dinitro product. According to examples, dibenzanthrone is treated with (1) nitric acid containing aqueous sulphuric acid in various proportions; (2) nitric acid and aqueous phosphoric acid; (3) aqueous nitric and sulphuric acids with the addition of glacial acetic acid.
