Abstract

2-Hydroxy-4-amino-benzoic acid is prepared by diazotizing 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid by treating with nitrous acid in concentrated sulphuric acid with cooling, diluting the resultant solution with water and boiling in the presence of a copper salt (preferably copper sulphate) to form 2-hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid, which is reduced to 2-hydroxy-4-amino-benzoic acid. Preferably, the boiling stage is carried out by pouring the diazotized solution into warm water in which copper sulphate is dissolved and heating rapidly to 110 DEG to 120 DEG C. In an example, 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid is dissolved in sulphuric acid, treated with sodium nitrite, the resultant solution is poured into warm copper sulphate solution and is boiled, giving 2-hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid which is reduced to 2-hydroxy-4-aminobenzoic acid by treating with hydrogen in alcohol in the presence of platinum oxide or by means of tin and concentrated hydrochloric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the preparation of derivatives of 2-hydroxy-4-amino-benzoic acid such as 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-4-aminobenzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-6-aminoisophthalic acid and 2-amino-4-nitro-x-sulphobenzoic acid by the process described above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
