Abstract
Sulphonic acids of 5-hydroxyacenaphthene are made by heating a free 5-aminoacenaphthene sulphonic acid with water under pressure, if desired with the addition of an acid or alkali in such a small quantity and concentration that the initial pH value of the mixture at ordinary temperature is between 1 and 7. The product may be removed before the reaction is finished, and the reaction continued. From the ammonium salts of the acids directly obtained, the other salts may be prepared. In examples, the amino-acenaphthenesulphonic acid obtained by heating 5-aminoacenaphthene with 80 per cent sulphuric acid is heated with water in one and in two stages, and also with very dilute sulphuric acid or caustic soda in one stage; 5-amino-acenaphthene-6 (or 7- or 8-) sulphonic acid is treated similarly. With other pH values, smaller yields are obtained. The salts of the hydroxy-acenaphthene sulphonic acids may be coupled to give azo-dyes.
