Abstract

Dimethylol acetone and its homologues are prepared by treating a saturated aliphatic ketone with formaldehyde, or a polymer thereof or a substance giving rise thereto, at a temperature between 0 and 60 DEG C. and in the presence of aqueous caustic alkali, the alkalinity of the reaction mixture being such that pH is greater than 10, preferably between 10.3 and 11,3. Examples are given of the preparation of dimethylol acetone and dimethylol methyl ethyl ketone from acetone and methyl ethyl ketone respectively and aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of aqueous caustic soda or potash, and of dimethylol acetone from acetone and trioxymethylene in the presence of aqueous caustic soda and ethyl alcohol.
