Abstract
Condensation products from formaldehyde, urea or thiourea or mixtures thereof and an acetate, for example sodium acetate, are prepared in aqueous alkaline solution, the condensation being carried out in two stages: (a) condensation is effected in concentrated solution until an hydrophilic resin is formed, (b) further condensation is effected in dilute solution until a hydrophobic resin is formed which separates on cooling. In one embodiment, after completion of the first stage, the reaction mixture is dissolved in twice its volume of hot water and boiled until on cooling a test sample, the hydrophobic resin is precipitated. In examples: (1) urea, thiourea and formaldehyde, (2) thiourea and formaldehyde, (3) urea and formaldehyde, (4) urea, thiourea, formaldehyde and butyl alcohol are condensed in presence of sodium carbonate and acetate, diluted with hot water and boiled till a test sample precipitates resin on cooling. Solutions of the resins in glycol monomethyl ether, can be used as lacquers, and moulded articles can be obtained by the use of fillers, e.g. cotton fibres.
