Abstract

5 - Nitro - 2 - furaldehyde thiosemicarbazone is obtained by the action of 5-nitro-furfural diacetate on thiosemicarbazide in acid solution with heating, at a pH below 4.0 and preferably below 3.0, thus dispensing with the step of hydrolysing the diacetate. A strong mineral acid is preferably added to produce the required pH. In the example, the reaction takes place in aqueous ethyl alcoholic solution in the presence of sulphuric acid.
