Abstract

254,402. Ehrhardt, E. F., and Hereward, R. M. April 4, 1925. Naphthylamine sulphonic acids are obtained by treating 1-nitro-naphthalene with an alkaline sulphite, or a mixture of alkaline sulphites, and ammonia under pressure in aqueous solution. Preferably a mixture of sodium and ammonium sulphites, obtained by neutralizing sodium bisulphite with ammonia, is used. This is heated with 1-nitro-naphthalene and ammonia in an autoclave and the product is poured into water, filtered, boiled to remove the excess of ammonia, and acidified with hydrochloric acid. Naphthionic acid separates out and is removed; 1 : 5 naphthalene sulphonic acid can be obtained from the mother liquor.
