Abstract

Boric acid is produced from crude borate of lime (boronatrocalcite) by pulping the latter with water, heating it to boiling point and admitting hot sulphur dioxide which liberates boric acid and also assists in the heating. Sand, lime and gypsum are separated by vacuum filtration, and the filtrate is cooled rapidly to crystallize the boric acid, which is dried preferably in a vacuum drying-apparatus operating at a high vacuum.
