Abstract

Acid calcium citrate is prepared from a solution of citric acid in good yield by a process characterized in that the addition of calcium oxide or carbonate and the precipitation of the acid citrate is effected in stages. In an example, a solution of citric acid is treated with one half the amount of lime necessary for complete neutralization, when the acid calcium citrate formed has separated, a further amount of lime, sufficient to bring the total lime up to two thirds of that necessary for complete neutralization is added, whereby a second precipitation of the acid citrate is effected. It is preferred that the operations should be carried out at a temperature not exceeding 20 DEG C.
