Abstract

A process for producing aluminium oxide by heating hydrated aluminium nitrate is characterized in that the heating is effected in stages. In the first stage, the nitrate is fused in its water of crystallization at a temperature not exceeding 150 DEG C., until 40 per cent of the water and nitric acid is evolved; the material approaching solidification is then heated to a temperature not exceeding 250 DEG C. until 75 per cent of the water and acid is evolved, and in the third stage above 250 DEG C. but not exceeding 450-500 DEG C., when complete decomposition is effected. By operating in this manner, the production of lower oxides of nitrogen is reduced to a minimum.
