Abstract

Pulverulent metallic titanium or titanium alloy is obtained by violent cooling of an aluminium-titanium alloy containing 40-65 per cent of Ti from the temperature at which the constituents form an intimate mixture and then reacting the alloy with an aqueous alkaline solution (heated soda solution). The titanium aluminium alloy is crushed and ground before treatment and after the above process has been carried out may be washed with a weak solution of acid to remove oxides. Reaction times for soda solutions of various strengths are given. The starting alloys may be Ti 43.08 per cent, Al 56.00 per cent, O2 0.90 per cent; or Ti 48.05 per cent, Al 50.80 per cent, O2 1.05 per cent, Fe and Si 0.10 per cent; and the final pulverulent metal may contain Al 5.2 per cent, O2 4.8 per cent; or Al 2 per cent, O2 1 per cent, remainder Ti. Details are given of an acid treatment process reducing the oxygen content to 0.3 per cent.
