Abstract
Titanium tetrachloride is obtained by chlorination of titanium-iron-copper mixtures at temperatures above 150 DEG C. An alloy containing these metals with 0,1 to 20 per cent copper may be used. Chlorination being started at 250 DEG C. Alloys which may be used are obtained (1) from copper-magnesium-aluminium alloys by adding copper if necessary, adding ilmenite, and subjecting the mixture to cupro-aluminothermic treatment, or (2) by subjecting a mixture of copper and ilmenite to electro-silicothermy.ALSO:Alloys containing titanium, iron, and copper with 0,1 to 20 per cent copper are obtained (1) from copper-magnesium-aluminium alloys by adding copper if necessary, adding ilmenite, and subjecting the mixture to cupro-aluminothermic treatment, or (2) by subjecting a mixture of copper and ilmenite to electrosilicothermy, and are used in a process for making titanium tetrachloride.
