Abstract

In extracting titanium compounds from titanium ores by means of concentrated sulphuric acid, an organic compound is added to the mixed ore and acid to produce finely divided carbon which assists in retaining within the mass a substantial amount of the steam evolved during the reaction. When treating ilmenite the mixture of ore and acid may be heated, say to 125 DEG C. and a small amount, say 0,6 per cent by weight of the ore, of a carbohydrate such as dextrine or sugar be added to initiate the reaction, which proceeds to completion without further application of external heat. The mass resulting from the reaction is highly porous and readily dissolved in water. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the addition to the mixture of ore and acid of any material which produces additional solid particles in the mass. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
