Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is obtained by heating a mixture of an alkaline earth (including magnesium) sulphate, a sulphide of a heavy metal, and ferric oxide, or a substance containing ferric oxide; it being arranged that there are 1.5 to 3 molecules of ferric oxide in the mixture to every atom of sulphide sulphur. In an example, gypsum pyrites and ferric oxide are heated to 900-950 DEG C., so long as sulphur dioxide is evolved. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the above proportions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
