Abstract
An alkali metal titanate having the formula M2O.5TiO2 is obtained by reacting together, as by heating to, say 800--1000 DEG C., a titanium ore such as rutile or an artificial titanium compound such as the oxide with the requisite quantity of an alkali metal compound such as sodium or potassium carbonate or sodium sulphate, or in the presence of carbon sodium bisulphate or potassium sulphate. By digesting the titanate with sulphuric acid at say 200--220 DEG C. and leaching with hot water, the titanium is brought into solution as sulphate from which other titanium compounds may be prepared by known methods.
