Abstract

Rutile titanium dioxide is prepared by calcining for 1-2 hours at 900-975 DEG C. a precipitate obtained by hydrolysing a titanium sulphate solution containing less than 0.025 per cent P2O5 on the basis of the TiO2. The sulphate solution which may contain 200-250 gms./litre TiO2, and have an acid-TiO2 ratio of 2 : 1, may be produced: (i) by smelting the ore to produce pig iron, which takes up most of the phosphorus present, and digesting the slag with sulphuric acid; (ii) by preliminarily leaching an ore with 10 per cent sulphuric acid to remove the phosphorus prior to the normal acid extraction; (iii) by salting out titanium sulphate crystals using sulphuric acid from the solution obtained by the normal acid extraction, washing with alcohol, redissolving, again salting out with sulphuric acid, washing with alcohol, and redissolving; (iv) by purifying titanium tetrachloride obtained by chloridization of ilmenite, oxidizing with air in the vapour phase, muffling to remove chlorine, and digesting with sulphuric acid.
