Abstract

In making silica fibres by leaching glass fibres with acids, sodium, potassium or lithium silicate glass fibres (see Group XXIII) are mixed with dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and the mixture is stirred until substantially all metal oxide is leached out. The acid is then run off and the resulting silica fibres are washed in water. Fibres containing between 98 and 99% of silica are obtained by heating the washed fibres to a temperature of 1000 DEG F., or over, to drive off free and combined water. The silica fibres are used for making felts and plates which are resistant to high temperatures (see Group VIII).
