Abstract
719,269. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 16, 1953 [July 11, 1952], No. 17555/52. Class 39(1) Glass envelope parts constructed wholly or in part of a glass of a borophosphate type for use in discharge lamps in which the discharge takes place in a vapour of an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, are treated, prior to their being brought info contact with the alkali metal vapour, by subjecting the parts to hot water at a temperature of about 70‹C for a period of up to 15 minutes, washing them with cold distilled water and finally drying them in-warm air at a temperature of about 30‹C. The treatment preferably takes place at the latest possible stage in the manufacture of the envelope of the lamp. The hot-washing step is preferably for 2 to 15 minutes in distilled water acidified with 0.2 per cent of nitric acid. The hot and cold water can be passed through the envelope without immersing in a bath where only the inside of the envelope requires treatment. The treatment removes surface contamination and materials such as sulphate and silicate of magnesium and iron which have a deleterious effect on the efficiency of sodium vapour lamps. Specification 675,594, [Group XXIII], is referred to.
