Ornamenting.-In producing a frosted surface on the inside of electric lamp bulbs or similar hollow thin glass articles, the surface is treated chemically or mechanically in the usual way, after which it is treated with an agent having a solvent action on the glass, the object being to provide a strengthened bulb. As solvent agent, a solution of ammonium bi-fluoride is preferably employed, solutions of potassium bifluoride and sodium bi-fluoride being also suitable. The bulb is cleaned with a dilute solution of ammonium-bi-fluoride, is washed, is then filled with a frosting medium which is allowed to remain from three to seven minutes and, after being again washed, is treated for five minutes with a solution of ammonium bi-fluoride, preferably warmed to 80‹ C. In an alternative process, particularly suitable for small bulbs, the small amount of frosting medium remaining in the bulb after it is emptied is utilized, the bulb being simply filled with warm water and agitated. The frosting medium employed is prepared by grinding a mixture of ammonium bi-fluoride, sodium bi-sulphate, and water, adding " foundry flour," and continuing the grinding.
