Abstract

294,237. Electrolux, Ltd., (Assignees of Platen-Munters Refrigerating System Aktiebolag). July 22 1927, [Convention date]. Aluminium and other light metals, treating; coloured surfaces, producing.-An article of aluminium, beryllium or other light metal is etched by anodic treatment in a bath containing a fluoride e.g. fluoride of sodium, potassium or ammonium, and then subjected to further anodic treatment in an electrolyte adapted to cause chemical alteration of the metal surface. The colour may be varied by addition to the first bath of an acid e.g. hydrofluoric acid, or an alkali e.g. ammonia or ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate. In the latter case a protective coating is produced. The article may be cleaned after etching by a short treatment as cathode. In an example the article is treated anodically in a bath consisting of a 1 per cent solution of potassium fluoride to which is added 1-5 per cent ammonium carbonate ; it is then washed in hot water and anodically treated in ammonium carbonate solution. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the second anodic treatment may be omitted, and the article may be dipped in wax after the first anodic treatment. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specication as accepted.
