Abstract

A green chromate coating formed on an aluminium or aluminium alloy surface by treating the surface with an aqueous acidic solution containing hexavalent chromium ions, phosphate ions, and fluoride ions is rinsed with an aqueous solution having a pH from 9-13. The alkaline substance may be an alkali metal, ammonium or alkaline earth metal compound or a condensed phosphate. Sodium carbonate, hydroxide, disilicate or zincate and aluminates, and stannates are also described. An ionic or non-ionic wetting agent, e.g. dodecylbenzenesulphonates, fatty alcohol sulphates, and condensation products of alkylene oxides with fatty alcohols, fatty acids, alkylphenols and alkylamines may be added to the rinsing solution. In an example the chromate coating is formed by dipping for 3 minutes at 50 DEG C. in a bath containing 7.8 g./l. CrO3, 17.0 g./l. P2O5, and 1.5 g./l. F, and after rinsing with water, the coating is rinsed at 70 DEG C. for 1 minute with a solution containing (parts by weight) 3 of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 1 of sodium disilicate. The surface may be finally rinsed with water.
