Abstract

A process of chromate coating Al or Al alloy surfaces by treating the surface with an aqueous acidic solution containing hexavalent chromium, a fluoride and a soluble tellunum compound. The chromium may be in the form of chromic acid or its salts e.g. alkali metal chromates or dichromates in a concentration of 0.5 to 50 g.p.l. The fluoride ion may be in the form of one or several of hydrofluoric, fluorosilicic and fluoroboric acids and alkali metal, Ba or ammonium salts of these acids in a concentration of 0.1-7.0 g.p.l. The tellunum compound may be H2TeO4, Na, K or ammonium salts of telluric or tellurous acid in a concentration of 0.15-7.5 g.p.l. measured as TeO2 and preferably less than the amount of chromium measured as CrO3 . 0.5-30 g.p.l. of nitric acid may be added e.g. in the form of nitrate, the solution having a pH of 0.5-2.5. The process is carried out preferably at 110-165 DEG F. and can be used continuously for coating strip metal when an ion exchange unit may be used. The surface may first be cleaned of oil, grease or oxide and the solution applied by dipping, brushing or spraying.
