Abstract
A chromate coating is formed on a surface of aluminium or aluminium base alloy by treatment, e.g. spraying or immersion at room temperature to 140 DEG F., with an aqueous acid solution containing the hexavalent chromium ion, e.g. 1-10 g./l. CrO3, and the fluoride ion, e.g. 0.05-5 g./l. F as HF, HBF4 or H2SiF6, together with a selenium compound wherein the concentration of SeO2 is less than that of CrO3 and less than 10 g./l., e.g. 0.5-3 g./l. SeO2 as selenium dioxide, selenious/selenic acid or a Se salt. The solution may further contain an aliphatic a -amino acid in which one or both of the H atoms of the amino group may be substituted, such as glycine, sarcosine or E.D.T.A., e.g. 0.1-10 g./l., in which case the SeO2 concentration is 0.05-1 g./l. and the pH between 1 and 4. A comparative solution is specifical containing CrO3, Na2CO3, boric acid and HF. Specification 846,363 also is referred to.
