Abstract

A chromate coating is formed on a zinc surface by applying an aqueous acidic solution containing hexavalent chromium and fluoride ions, and an activator in the form of tungstate, molybdate, vanadate or uranate, and then rinsing in a solution containing hexavalent chromium ion. The first solution may also include arsenate ions, a buffering agent e.g. boric or silicic acid, and aluminium fluoride. The pH is 1.3 to 3.2, and nitric, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids may be added to adjust the pH. The zinc surface may be first cleaned with an alkali metal hydroxide, phosphate or silicate e.g. 50% sodium metasilicate and 50% trisodium phosphate.
