Abstract

530,006. Coating surfaces. PYRENE CO., Ltd. June 5, 1939, No. 16492. Convention date, June 8, 1938. [Class 82 (ii)] A process for improving the resistance of a metal surface to corrosion and rendering it more suitable for the application of paints, lacquers and similar finishes, comprises forming on the metal surface, which may already have thereon a phosphate, oxalate, oxide or similar coating, a film of an aqueous acidic solution, containing a phosphate radical, an acid radical containing hexavalent chromium and a radical of a metal which has a valency of two or more and which does not reduce the hexavalent chromium in the solution, and drying the film on the metal surface. The phosphate employed is preferably an orthophosphate, though meta-, pyro-, or hypophosphates may be used. The hexavalent chromium compound may be chromic acid or a chromate or dichromate. The metal radical may be zinc, manganese, chromium, aluminium, magnesium, cadmium, calcium or nickel, and may be introduced as chromate or dichromate together with orthophosphoric acid or as a di-hydrogen phosphate together with chromic acid and with orthophosphoric in addition if desired. A wetting agent may also be added to the solution such as sulphonation products of the higher alcohols or alkyl sulphates such as the substance known as Duponol W.A. Paste. The surface treated may be of any metal, including iron, steel, zinc, cadmium, magnesium, tin, lead, nickel, aluminium, copper, and alloys of these metals.
