Abstract

547,408. Coating metals; alloys. PYRENE CO., Ltd. (Parker Rust-Proof Co.). Jan. 23, 1941, No. 927. Addition to 534,852. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] In the method of forming a chromate coating on iron and steel as described in the parent Specification, the bonding film consists of a coating of cadmium, nickel, tin, lead or copper or an alloy consisting predominantly of one or more of these and not more than 0.0001 inch thick and preferably applied electrolytically. Alloys which may be used are cadmium-zinc alloys containing 70-90 per cent. of cadmium, nickel-cobalt containing 90-95 of nickel, nickelcopper (70-85 of nickel), brass or bronze. The coating solution applied over the metallic coating may contain orthophosphate radicles and trivalent chromium radicles introduced as such or formed by the reduction of hexavalent chromium radicles already present. The metallic coating may be provided with a slight coating, e.g. an oxide coating, which is more reactive with the hexavalent chromium coating solution than with the metallic coating.
