Ornamenting.-Coatings of oxides of manganese are obtained on metals by treatment with a permanganate solution containing also an agent accelerating the precipitation. In the case of metals and a11oys other than iron and iron a11oys, such as aluminium, magnesium, and their alloys, and zinc, the solution, which may be neutral or acid, includes hydrogen peroxide or a so1ub1e chromate; the use of these substances in the case of iron and iron alloys is optional. In the case of these latter metals and alloys, hydrof1uoric, acetic, or other acid may be used as the addition.
