Abstract

A coating consisting mainly of ferrous oxalate is formed on a surface of copper or a copper alloy by treatment with an aqueous solution of iron oxalate in which all or a predominating part of the iron is ferric, the total iron being at least 0.5 per cent. of the solution and the solution being at least as acid as an aqueous solution of ferric oxalate alone. The oxalate ions may be derived from oxalic acid, ferrous oxalate or ferric oxalate; free oxalic acid may be present. If ferrous oxalate is used, oxidizing agents such as potassium dichromate, or potassium permanganate or, preferably, sodium chlorate or hydrogen peroxide are added. Chloride ions are preferably present. The coating appears also to contain some copper oxalate. Alloys which may be so treated include (1) Cu 95 per cent., Al 5 per cent., (2) Cu 96 per cent., Si 3 per cent. Mn 1 per cent., (3) Fe .5 per cent., Ni 29 per cent., Mn 0.75 per cent., Cu balance, (4) Sn 5 per cent. P .03-.35 per cent., Cu balance. The treatment is said to facilitate plastic deformation.
