Abstract

Corrosion resistant coatings on metals or alloys are produced by treating with an aqueous solution of a metal phosphate to which has been added the cations of at least two metals, excluding the alkali metals, one more basic and the other less basic than the metal being treated, the total amount of added cations lying between 0.003 and 0.04 grms. per litre of the aqueous solution. It is preferred that the total amount of such added cations does not exceed 0.02 and preferably 0.01 grams per litre. The metal to be treated may be a ferrous metal when the more basic metal may be one or more of the metals zinc, magnesium, aluminium, barium, strontium, manganese, calcium and chromium and the less basic metal one or more of nickel, cobalt, lead and copper. The bath may comprise an aqueous solution of ferrous phosphate and iron in phosphoric acid. The metal cations may be added to a concentrate which is then diluted twenty-five times to give the phosphating bath.
