Steel or e.g. a zinc plated steel surface is contacted prior to a phosphating treatment with an aqueous suspension containing bi- or trivalent metal phosphates, e.g. Zn, Ca, Mg, Al, ferrous, and ferric. The pH may be 3 to 10 and the temperature 10 to 90 DEG C.
