Abstract

A surface of Fe, Al or Zn is contacted with an aqueous solution containing hexaralent chronium ions, e.g. chemic acid or the chromates or dichramates of Zn, Ca, Cd, Mg and amommium, and then converting at least some of the hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium with an aqueous solution containing 1À0 to 15 per cent by weight of hydrogen peroxide. The solution may also contain phosphoric acid or the phosphates of Zn, Ca, Al, Cd, Cr, Mg or ammonium.
