Abstract
In the deposition of zinc phosphate on steel arsenate ions are added to the phosphating solution. In an example a concentrate of (parts per cent by weight): phosphoric acid 41.0, zinc oxide 8.3, sodium chlorate 10.8, nickelous nitrate hexahydrate 9.1, disodium arsenate (anhydrous) 0.25, water 30.55, is diluted with water and sprayed on the steel for one minute at 175 DEG F. The acid ratio should be within the range of 4:1 to 15:1. The ratio can be adjusted by adding phosphoric, nitric or hydrochloric acids or zinc oxide or carbonate and sodium hydroxide. The steel may be cleaned by tetrasodium phosphate and a wetting agent or trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene. The preferred ranges of the composition are (grams per litre): nickel 0.1-7, zinc ions 0.5-10, phosphate ions 2-20, nitrate ions 0.5-20, chlorate ions 0.5-15, arsenate ions 0.01-1.0. The arsenate may be in the form of arsenic acid, Na2HAsO4, NaH2AsO4, Na3AsO4, NaAsO4 or arsenic trioxide or pentoxide. The nitrate may be in the form of nitric acid, zinc, nickel or alkali metal nitrates.
