Abstract

Iron, steel, zinc and aluminium surfaces are given fine-grained nodular phosphate coatings by treating with an aqueous acidic solution containing 0.05 to 1.5% (wt/vol) Zn, 0.012 to 7.5% Ca, the weight ratio of Ca to Zn being 0.25 to 5.0; phosphate ions and an oxidizing agent, the ratio of oxidant to phosphate ions being equivalent in effect on the rate of coating formation to a ratio of nitrate ions to phosphate ions of 0.2 to 5.0 by weight. A nitrate is the preferred oxidant but others may be a chlorate, nitrate, m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, hydrogen peroxide, dinitrobenzene sulphonate, bromate iodate, picric acid, t-butyl hydrogen peroxide or quinnone, or mixtures thereof. Equivalent ratios are said to be 0.02 to 2.0 for chlorate, 0.004 to 0.05 for nitrite, 0.06 to 3.0 for m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, 0.0008 to 0.01 for H2O2, 0.04 to 1.5 for dinitrobenzene sulphonate; for other oxidants and for mixtures the equivalent of the nitrate to phosphate ion ratio of 0.2 to 5.0 may be determined by trial. Chloride ions may be added if nitrate is not the oxidant. The Ca may be added as oxide, by dioxide, chloide, mono- or di-hydrogen phosphate, but preferably as nitrate. When nitrate or chlorate (or both) is the oxidant the ratio of Ca ion to NO3 and/or ClO3 ion should be 0.1 to 0.3 by weight; and generally the amount of Ca should increase with amount of oxidant. A replenishing mixture or concentrated aqueous solution contains Zn, Ca and PO4 radicals or ions, the ratio of Ca to Zn by weight being 0.06 to 1.4 and of Zn to PO4 being 0.2 to 0.4. The phosphated surface may be rinsed in hot water followed by aqueous chromic acid containing e.g. 0.7 gm/litre, and finally oiled, then if desired painted.
