Abstract

A phosphating solution comprises a coating phosphate and an alpha-amino-polycarboxylic acid. The latter may be ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, triglycine or trimethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid; the acid may be added as its sodium salt. Phosphates of zinc, manganese or iron may be used. Accelerators may be present, e.g. nitrates, nitrites, chlorates, bromates, iodates, sulphites, m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, hydroxylamine, picric acid. Fluorides, borofluorides, nickel sulphate and nickel nitrate may be present. Ferrous, zinc and aluminium surfaces may be treated.
