Abstract

A thin phosphate coating is formed on a ferrous surface by means of an aqueous solution of zinc phosphate containing a chlorate accelerator, the temperature of the solution not exceeding 40 DEG C and the solution being such that the ratio of zinc to phosphate by weight is from 1:2.18 to 1:3.7 and the ratio of phosphate to chlorate by weight is not greater than 1.25:1. Another accelerator e.g. a nitrate may also be present. The coatings may be treated with a solution of chromic acid or a chromate. The process may be applied to iron or steel before fabrication into a finished article or prior to drawing.
