Abstract

A process of producing a corrosion-resistant coating on zinc, cadmium, alloys thereof, zinc or cadmium-coated material, spelter-coated iron or steel, copper, brass, bronze and other copper alloys comprises a dipping or spraying procedure by means of an aqueous solution containing ZnCl2 added as such and a water-soluble chromium compound from the group chromic acid, chromates, and dichromates, said chromium compound being in predominant amount. In an example hot-dipped galvanized iron is treated after cleaning with a solution containing 60-100 gm./litre of chromic acid and 5-15 gm./litre of ZnCl2 at a temperature of 60 DEG F. to 212 DEG F. for 30 to 240 secs. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that ZnC.2 may be replaced by MgCl2, NaCl, copper ammonium chloride or SnCl2. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
