Abstract

In a process for forming a protective coating on a metallic surface by treatment with an aqueous coating composition which interacts with the surface or with an integral coating thereon, the surface is preheated and the coating composition is applied in the form of finely-divided particles, the temperature of the surface and the size and quantity of the particles being so correlated that the particles dry in the position where they first strike the surface. The surface is preferably maintained at at least 135 DEG F. during application of the coating composition, being heated either before or both before and during the application. The surface may be heated after coating to complete the reaction or cure the coating. The particles are applied by an atomizing gun and preferably have diameters in the range 15-500 microns. Two or more layers of the coating composition may be supplied. Bare metal surfaces, e.g. of iron, mild steel, stainless steel, zinc, copper, aluminium, magnesium, brass or bronze, may be coated: alternatively, surfaces already coated with e.g. phosphate or oxide layers, may be treated. Coating compositions which may be used are acidic solutions of zinc phosphate, manganese phosphate, iron phosphate, calcium phosphate, alkali metal phosphates, oxalic acid or oxalates, amine phosphate solutions, dispersions or emulsions of lubricating phosphates, e.g. lauryl phosphate, mineral acid solutions, acidic solutions containing sulphide or sulphite ions, acidic rinse solutions containing chromic acid or dichromates, acidic or alkaline metallic chromate rinsing solutions, and solutions containing hexavalent chromium and organic polymeric material e.g. polyvinyl alcohol or polyacrylic acid. Many examples are given of such compositions. Specifications 840,890 and 845,259 are referred to.
